Formula Sheane is a one-make, single-seater championship; all Formula Sheane cars are mechanically identical, powered by a 1.8-litre engine. Originally designed as a step up for Formula Vee drivers, these cars enjoy a vast excess of power over grip- making them hugely exciting both to drive and to watch.
The cars were designed and built by Sheane Cars in Blainroe in County Wicklow and parts are always available and are very inexpensive by single seater standards. Sheane Cars also attend all race meetings with a stock of spares and sometimes even a complete spare car! The cars can accelerate to 100 km/h in under four seconds and are capable of speeds in excess of 250 km/h on the faster circuits.
You can buy a Formula Sheane from €6,000 to about €9,000, with the cheaper cars easily upgraded to the spec of the winning cars In terms of running costs, the engines are in a pretty standard state of tune so do not give much trouble. Similarly, the gearboxes are standard spec and being light, the cars are not particularly hard on pads or Tyres, which are Avon control spec- one tyre for both wet and dry conditions to keep costs down.
